Building an online business can be overwhelming at first. Some people start working on the side while going a full-time job at the same time. In my case, I left my corporate job before I discovered about working from home. I don’t even have the slightest idea how to make money online and I never considered freelancing at first. All I want is the financial and time freedom, and I’m glad I entered the online world.

Do you plan on working remotely? According to Forbes by 2027, the majority of the workforce will be comprised of freelancers, not regular, traditional employees. Which means there’s a rise in demand and opportunities for freelancers. Remote work becomes the norm because of the flexible working schedules and being able to spend time with family.

Planning to work from home this year? Here are a few tips to help you start off on the right foot.

Research thoroughly. This is a crucial step in the planning phase. You might want to know more about the online world before building your own empire. Read online, there are unlimited resources on the web and most are free. Take note, not all of the online jobs are legit, scammers are everywhere so beware and practice due diligence before giving your personal information and accepting jobs.

Have a plan and set clear goals. Do you want to work from home full-time or do it as a side hustle? What will be the sources of your online income, will you go for a product-based or service-based business? If you are interested to become an online service provider learn how I started my Virtual Assistant business and the list of services you can offer to your clients plus the tools and equipment you need in this guide.

Take a break and live in the present moment.

This is one of the biggest struggles of a remote worker. Treat yourself once in a while, celebrate the small wins and stop, take a deep breathe and live in the present moment. It’s a must! According to State of Remote Work Report of Buffer, the biggest struggles of working remotely are Loneliness (21%), collaborating and/or communicating (21%) and distractions at home (16%).

How to make money online in 2019

Below are a few ways to earn a decent income online without leaving the comfort of your home.

Blogging is one of the best ways to earn a passive income. Sure, starting a blog is a no brainer but making money blogging is not an easy money scheme. It takes time and involves hard work, that’s why it’s not for everyone. If you are interested in starting a blog this year, please be sure to check out my guide here.

Becoming an online service provider is a great way to make money online when you are just starting out. It doesn’t require much experience and upfront investment plus you can offer the skills that you already have. In my case, I have years of experience as an Executive/Admin Assistant turned to General Virtual Assistant. Currently, I handle social media and various admin tasks for my US based client. Writing is a lucrative way to earn a decent income online. Some established and expert writers are charging rates up to $1,000 per article depending on the type and length of the post. The working hours are flexible and the income as well. As a freelance writer, I don’t charge as much like that since I am just starting out, I have an ongoing writing and basic graphic design project and I’m loving it so far since I am able to gain experience and practice my writing skills plus the pay is not that bad.

If you are into selling of physical or digital products then a product-based business is the best for you. You can sell your stuff at eBay, Etsy or Amazon or you can build your own online shop. I haven’t tried it personally, but one of my clients owns one and I can say that her store is generating a decent income.

Becoming an affiliate marketer is also a lucrative way of making money online. You just need to sign up as an affiliate for a company of your choice and promote the product through a blog post, product review, tutorial etc. When someone purchases through your links you will earn a certain commission. Easy peasy, right? Well, not really, unless you have a strategy and are promoting well.

A lot of firms and small business owners hire a consultant. Do you want to become a consultant? If you are an expert in a certain field you can offer your professional or technical advice to improve your client’s business.

General categories of consultants based on various industries are as follows:

Human Resources

Information Technology

Working from home and making money online sure can give you the financial and time freedom you have always wanted. But deciding whether to leave your 9 to 5 job should not be taken lightly. Make sure you do the necessary preparations before taking the leap into the digital world.

It is worth noting that being a self-employed individual you will have a fair share of struggles too, but as Esme Bianco says:

You can’t get anywhere in life without taking risks.
