Want to work on your own terms and be your own boss?

Looking for ways you can earn a few extra cash with a side hustle?

I’m an avid fan of happily ever after stories which made me over fantasized freelancing at first.

When I was starting I often told myself that this career is what I’ve been looking for (that’s after I broke up with my corporate cube).

Well, that’s absolutely possible to have a life of freedom and travel. But also a pretty tough way to go when you are just starting.

So you want to be your own boss?

Building your own empire and becoming your own boss sure has a lot of perks. But in reality, it’s more than just the benefits, it also requires hard work.

If you are thinking about taking the plunge, here are few of the things you should expect in the first months of starting your freelancing business.

Freelancing is not an overnight success. Sure, freelancing can give you a life you have always wanted, working from home with your family, no long hours of commute, away from office politics and an opportunity to earn more.

Yes, that’s all possible but always be realistic, success in freelancing does not come to you overnight. It involves hard work and determination.

Sometimes you need to sacrifice leisure for work. This is the reality and this is how things work when you are just starting, you need to make little sacrifices in order to build the foundation of your new empire.

Everything involves risks. When it comes to freelancing everything is a risk. I started this career knowing that it’s not going to be easy. Risks are everywhere and nobody likes it.

I got my first client after two weeks since I started and decided to focus on working on it to gain more ideas about the freelance world. After two months I considered opening for another client in addition to the first one.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. If you are thinking to do the same, weigh your options carefully and condition your mind for it.

Fast forward, I am now experiencing financial freedom doing my own business, I have full control over my time, I can travel anytime without filing a leave plus I can earn while traveling and most of all, I can spend more time with my family.

Sounds great, right? Well, let me walk you through the basic steps I took to reach this milestone.

Define What You Really Want and Why You Want to Do It

It can be your long-time passion that had been buried for so many years. It can be anything that makes your heart flutter by just a thought of it.

Ask yourself why you want to do it and if you’ve really got what it takes. If your answer is a big YES, then you’re good to go to the next step, it may not be an overnight success but no one can stop you now.

Make an Actionable and Reachable Plans

Being organized is crucial when you start your own business. Organizing your calendar and updating your plans regularly is a must. When making plans you should see to it that you always set attainable goals for you to accomplish.

Like for example, when preparing your to-do list for a day make sure that you allocate a reasonable timeline for each task depending on how easy or difficult it is.

You can also make use of a vision board. There are also productivity tools online which are absolutely free, that you should take advantage of.

Read More and Sharpen Your Research Skills

Do you love to read and learn new things? If not, you should start doing it now.

Reading good stuff can help you in many meaningful ways. It can even help improve your life. It just depends on how you apply those learnings and how determined you are to make a change.

During your free time, why not read online on different aspects that interest you? There are many free online resources you can take advantage of in learning new skills.

So, start falling in love with reading!

Challenge Yourself to Learn New Things

Learning is fun only if you do it by heart.

As creative as I am, I always look for new skills to learn. I love learning new things and ideas (it always makes me stoked).

But don’t worry if you don’t have enough time to spare for this, try doing one new thing at a time consistently and you’ll be amazed at the results.

I’m a work in progress so I’m enjoying learning new things in the process.

So Now, You Have a Well-Researched Plan, What’s Next? Put it Into Action

Start doing one step at a time and don’t worry if it doesn’t work out on your first try.

Stay motivated and fan the flame continuously by reading success stories and listening to inspiring podcasts related to the subject you are working. Trust me, it works!

FINAL TAKEAWAY

If you’re anything like me who can’t be confined in the four corners of an office cubicle, then break free! Leave your comfort zone and experience the freedom and fulfillment of doing the things that you love.

Open the door to becoming your own boss with consistency.

Remember if you want to live an extraordinary life you should be willing to do extraordinary things.

As Lou Holts says, virtually nothing is impossible in this world if you just put your mind to it and maintain a positive attitude.

It’s your turn now, what are the steps that you took on building your own empire? If you are just starting, what business or life goals are you looking to achieve this year?
